Modern Foreign languages at St David's

We recognise the importance of Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) and we acknowledge the influence that Europe has on our lives and, as the UK is becoming an increasingly multicultural society, we have a duty to provide our children with an understanding of other cultures and languages. The intent of our MFL curriculum is to provide all of our children with a high-quality education in MFL, which develops their love of learning about other languages and cultures. Learning a language enriches the curriculum, providing excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children and teachers, helping to create enthusiastic, creative learners and to develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life. The skills, knowledge and understanding gained make a major contribution to the development of children’s oracy and literacy and to their understanding of their own culture and those of others. We encourage children’s confidence, we strive to stimulate and we encourage children’s curiosity about language. Our current MFL taught is French, however we strive to provide children with opportunities to experience a range of other languages. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of our children’s primary education, they have acquired an understanding of both spoken and written French, confidence to speak in French with others and know how important other languages can be in their future, giving them the skills to continue their journey to become fluent linguists.
